On Saturday 31st May we performed at Caroline & John’s Wedding which was held on some private land near Elvington in York in a stunning marquee provided by CWC Malings. Caroline booked us back in October and opted for our Club Class Wedding Disco package, along with a pair of wireless microphones for the speeches.
We arrived on the Friday evening to setup the equipment and met Caroline’s mother who was busy cutting flowers and making some stunning arrangements for inside and outside the marquee. Sadly most of the week the weather had been pretty rubbish with non-stop rain so the ground next to the single track lane was very soggy and this led to quite a few vehicles getting stuck and having to be pulled out by tractors! Luckily by the time we got there most of the other suppliers had finished loading so we were fine to leave the van on the lane.
On the Saturday our DJ arrived about 6pm ready to set the microphones up for the speeches, which were interspersed throughout the Wedding Breakfast. First up was the father of the bride, Ralph, who gave a great speech which was met with lots of laughter and huge applause. The main course looked delicious, each table had their own joint of beef which they got to carve at the table. The groom’s speech followed the main course and John got a bit emotional near the end whilst talking about his new bride however this was quickly under control when he moved onto talking about his Best Men!
The Best Men’s speech was really funny and included many many stories about John’s past including his failed idea to start a business empire in Spain selling ice creams by day and kebabs by night! The Best Men had liaised with our DJ to include a few songs during their speeches that tied in with some stories about Johns youth. When recollecting John working out in his bedroom as a teenager our DJ played Boom! Shake The Room by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and whilst telling the guests a story about how John used to try to impress girls while in America by pretending he was in the band Hanson our DJ dropped in a snippet of Mmmm Bop!
Once the speeches were finished it was time to cut the cake, which was an amazing looking sponge cake, and for the Bride & Groom’s First Dance. They had chosen Train – Hey Soul Sister and had clearly been rehearsing their dance moves! All the other guests joined them on the dancefloor halfway through and it was a really special moment with lots of photos being taken.
After the First Dance it was time for the band to play, they were called The Hares and had travelled all the way up from London to perform. It was a 3 piece band with drums, guitar and vocals and they performed everything from Pharrell – Happy to The Jackson 5 – I Want You Back and Chuck Berry – Johnny B Goode. They were a really lovely group of guys and all the guests loved the set.
Finally it was our turn and we started the evening off with a few of Caroline’s favourite tunes – Culture Club was first, followed by some Whitney Houston and then the Groom came over to request a song for this new bride. We don’t play Neil Diamond very much, however Sweet Caroline seemed rather fitting and about 95% of the guests joined in singing the chorus to a blushing bride.
The party continued until just after 12:30 as Caroline & John had their final dance to Take That’s Greatest Day and left under an archway made by the guests.
Mr & Mrs Hanson had booked their Wedding Disco, PA System and Microphone Hire with Club Class Entertainment.
